Christopher Cancel says: "I had the honor of working for Mark for many years. I had a role in the Warrior information network and Win Data Communications as well as Del Astra industries. My Life was very complicated during those years yet he continued to give me chances. You died before i had the opportunity to thank you for all you did. I also had some apologies to make which i regret you will never hear. I hope your Wife and Son are still in good health."

Vick Richardson says: "Dear Page, Jack misses Mark immeasurably, and his heart is still tender, his love and delight in Mark was so great. Jack is still in Avola, BC. He's a great grandfather twice over through his wife Carroll, and loves it. Page, I am thinking of you today - Mark was a wonderful brother and friend. No one could have a better friend than Mark. I have always seen much of him in you in that you both give full out energy to the things that interest you and have a gift for making people laugh. I think of Mark often and am sad, then I remember the funny things he did and said and am happy I had the luck to know him. Vicky Richardson"

I had contacted the WIN network and told him that I lived in San Luis Obispo (at the time). He told me he had someone at Cal Poly and he would contact him to get a hold of me. A week later Mark called back and asked if I was contacted. When I told him that I hadn't been he said he'd try again. 30 minutes later I got a call from Sheldon Rhodes and we began a three year affair in Budo Taijutsu. Through this contact I was able to get train with some fantastic people and make a few new friends. I will always be grateful to Mark for his generosity and warm welcome.
DJ Bassett says: "Mark was at the top of the crowd when "best practices" was a term then seldom used. Mark was there when, in Santa Barbara, we were transitioning from first-aid responders to MICU paramedics. He saw the profession as just that, a medical care delivery occupation that participants should strive to do and be the best that they could. Mark set the standard of excellence to which all of us could aspire. It did not matter whether it was Beldon Morrison, Charlie Portwood or the President of the United States, each patient mattered to Mark, and he made sure they knew that. Thank you my friend for your mentorship! Happy Trails!"

Michael Schlags says: "Mark and I had the opportunity to become friends in 1973 when we both started working for an ambulance company in Santa Barbara. Mark was one year older than me and I was 18 years old when we first met, which was of course memorable. Qualifying that we worked several 24-hour shifts in a row, napping during the daytime was not only acceptable but necessary. Mark was napping on the couch at the Santa Barbara Ambulance crew quarters and I remember asking who he was. The reply was that he was a martial arts guy, so don't mess with him... Needless to say, I did not head the advise and went forward with tickling his socked feet. His reaction was what you would expect, on his feet in a fighting stance ready to kill me... Appropriate warnings were given and he went back to taking his nap. Of course, I waited for him to fall asleep again and again did the wiggling fingers on the bottom of his feet. This time he reacted more forcibly, which was met by my next kung-fu imitation. I have absolutely no martial arts training... I suppose I was one of the few folks who were not completely intimidated by Mark but I'm not a small person and what I saw was an outstanding person and medic. Both of our reputations as field medics brought us both closer together professionally. We were young, aggressive and worked very well together. We were in so many ways absolute opposites. That's why our friendship never stopped being active until 10/22/2010. Now I can only talk to Mark in my prayers, which I know he listens too. It's just too weird to click on a radio and have a Rolling Stones song just start to play... it's only Rock & Roll, but I like it... The opportunity arose for Mark and I to attend paramedic school in Los Angeles at the Queen of Angels Hospital. What made this adventure so very cool was that we actually lived at the hospital and came back to Santa Barbara for the weekend. I do want to share something that happened to Mark and I when he invited me for the first time to drive up to his dad's place in the bay area. We drove Mark's land rover which was REALLY slow and NOISY. Mark asked his dad if we could take his car to see one of our paramedic buddies, Dave Holland, who had just gotten hired by the Santa Rosa Fire Department. I remember Mark threw me the keys to his dad's car, which was parked in the garage. I could not believe my eyes when I saw a white Rolls Royce... that I ended up driving Code 2.5, following Dave's fire engine to a structure fire. For me, as a recently retired Fire Captain, this particular fire was monumental because it is the only time I ever saw an actual backdraft occur. Mark and I watched in amazement as Dave kicked in a lower floor door to gain access and every window in the structure simultaneously blew out! Wow... Prior to paramedic school, Mark moved in with me as a roommate and we ended up moving from a condo, where we shared it with another guy, to a mountain cabin that we found in the Trout Club, which is located in the mountains above Santa Barbara. We eventually moved from there to Mark's first home purchase, which was at the mountain top community of Painted Cave. His house had an adjacent guest house where I lived. Mark had gotten married and had moved to a really cool place that had an amazing view of the Santa Barbara Channel Islands, the Pacific Ocean and all of Santa Barbara below. With much regret, Mark left Santa Barbara and moved to Stockton to help his dad, Danny Hodel, run his waterbed manufacturing business. which Mark actively pursued for years. This was an exciting time for Mark, taking on a company which eventually became Mark's responsibility with his fathers passing. Through Danny and Mark, I was encouraged to start my own business and be more than I was before meeting Mark. This was a fun time for my family and I because we drove up to see Mark several times a year through the years to pick up decontamination tank liners made at Mark's factory. Anyone who knew Mark had the benefit in life of having his counsel and advice and were a better person for having had Mark be a part of their lives. I look forward to sharing more about Mark through photography after the memorial service. I look forward to meeting all of Mark's friends and associates on December 4th. Until then, stay safe, Mike Michael Schlags, Fire Captain (Retd.) Santa Barbara, CA mschlags@gmail.com"

rocco macchiaverna says: "In ‘97 at one of the first seminars I attended in Redbank NJ to train with Jack I was the new guy and did not understand the bizarre new way of training. I was the odd guy out and did not have any one to train with. Mark saw me standing there disoriented, walked up to me and asked if I needed a training partner. With amazing patience he explained each technique to me & made me feel welcome. I did not know his rank or history with the bujinkan at that time. I don’t remember the training from that day but I do remember Mark, a decent kind generous man. I never got to know him well but did see him at a few TaiKai and 2 trips to Japan. He always had a smile and a friendly greeting. Just a great kind good man, he will be missed! Rocco Macchiaverna"

Larry Hembel says: "It hard to put into words loosing Mark, he was a friend and a help to so many in the Bujinkan. I remember the days that training was held at a community center with a tile floor and I met Mark and a lot of the guys I know today. Mark would give us ideas and from there we would all learn from each other. My first trip to Japan I was accompanied by Mark, loosely said. He really immersed me in the adventure by showing me breakfast and then leaving me with a few other guys to make our way around and really experience without being shown. He was a guide but didn’t need to always be there. But he was when you needed him and it was that way through the entire time I knew him. Mark was always in the shadows, you’d see glimpses and smiles he would stop by and talk and then like a ninja he would disappear again. There are many people we know and many we love throughout our lives. Mark was a man you can never forget. His stories embodied budo and the way we should think about training and life. Mark gathered and rallied us together to enjoy this art and opened his home for training and guests. Marks spirit will be with all of us that were touched by his profound presence. Mark will be remembered for ever and greatly missed as long"

Sheldon says: "I think everyone else has captured the essence of who Mark was, and what he meant to so many people, better than I ever will. Words cannot express the debt of gratitude that I owe to Mark. I met him when I was 15 (1985-ish) at the Stockton dojo (which at the time was the Del Astra Warehouse). He immediately welcomed me into the training group and made me feel like I was a part of something great (which, BTW, I was). It was his warmth, knowledge and overall kindness that kept me training through the years. As the military had taken me farther and farther away from active training, I always looked forward to those events that I knew Mark would be attending (insert seminar or tai kai here). His smile and, most times, awesome jokes ;) would always put me in a good mood and help me relax into training. I had always looked up to Mark. I had a crappy father, so having someone like Mark, who was almost like an older brother, to bounce things off of helped guide me in the right direction. As the years went on, and the physical distance between us grew, I didn't get a chance to see him as much. One of the last times I saw him, and got to spend time with him, was one of the most fun and memorable times I have ever had. Without going into specifics, we were literally on a "party bus" for a bachelor party in Wisconsin. After the night was over, I took the time to tell Mark how I felt and was grateful for the opportunities that he gave to me in regards to training and the guidance he gave to me as it pertains to my current career. I am very saddened by his passing, but I take solace in knowing that I was able to let him know how I felt. He was a great man, who did a lot (selflessly) for the Bujinkan and for many people who were lucky to have known him. My thoughts go out to his family and son. He is greatly missed. I have the feeling that he has probably already started up another training group in the afterlife so that we all have a place to train when we pass on ;)"

Vincent C Paladino says: "I was quietly standing in a doorway watching Kendoka train at the Ayase dojo,a fascinated stranger in a strange land. A fellow westerner walked up and stood beside me, then commented "Pretty interesting stuff". I agreed, then asked him "What are you here for"? "Bujinkan",he answered. His response was so completely without self importance, so absolutely simple, that this stranger put me at ease as quickly as an old friend might. We spoke some more, he answered my questions, and I was left feeling the grace of good fortune. Thank you Mark, for being the face of friendship."

Richard Van Donk says: "I met Mark in about 1982 at his martial arts shop in Stockton, CA and we started a friendship that very day. After his going to Japan in 1983 we started a Ninja training group and then a dojo. He hosted every teacher of the art to our training group. This gave us all something very special. Mark was very special and helped the Bujinkan in ways that no one will ever really understand. He was very humble in these regards. I only say this to share my gratitude of his grace in introducing Soke Hatsumi to me and giving me an opportunity to become a better human being. In those days I spent a lot of time with him and he was always a generous friend who always spoke and lived his truth. A true warrior with heart. Mark's contribution to the Bujinkan, Buyu, and to me personally was huge but more than that he was a wonderful man, a good father, and a great person to have as a friend. I will never forget him or the gifts that he gave us all. May his heart find peace."

Joe Perez says: "From my first seminar at Stockton dojo, to my first Buyu Camp many years later, Mark was a tantamount symbol of warrior graciousness. His steadfast efforts to promote the Bujinkan warrior arts, budo, and the networking community of countless students was integral in the burgeoning world wide phenomenon this all has become. While he was soft spoken, his empowering voice spoke through his actions within his commitment to the warrior life. His successful endeavors to instill the meaning of martial friendliness will echo on through all the lives he touched and continue forth in the lives we all touch with the memory of all he shared with us. I will never forget his welcoming essence of kindness and encouragement."
